The process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their condition or chance of recovery with and without treatment. It rations patient treatment efficiently (controls the distribution) of scarce resources (goods, services, personnel, etc.) when available resources are insufficient for all to be treated immediately. Triage influences the order and priority of emergency treatment for the patient.
A triage tag is a prefabricated label placed on each patient to accomplish several objectives:
• identify the patient,
• bear a record of assessment findings,
• identify the priority of the patient's need for medical treatment and transport,
• track the patients' progress through the triage process, and
• identify additional hazards, such as contamination.
