The act of intentionally causing one's own death.
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death worldwide; approximately 0.5% of people die by suicide.
Suicides resulted in 828,000 deaths globally in 2015; three-quarters of these suicides occur in low- and middle-income countries.
Mental disorders (depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, personality disorders, anxiety disorders, etc.) and substance use disorders (alcoholism, the use of benzodiazepines, etc.) are risk factors.
There is an association between suicide and medical conditions such as: chronic pain, traumatic brain injury, cancer, kidney failure (that require hemodialysis), HIV, and systemic lupus erythematosus.
Some suicides are impulsive acts due to stress, such as from financial difficulties, troubles with relationships, or bullying.
