Picosulfate acts on the enteric nerves in the intestinal wall to increase muscle contractions, thereby stimulating peristaltic action and promoting defecation; it is a contact stimulant laxative.
Sodium picosulfate is typically prescribed in a combined formulation with the osmotic laxatives magnesium citrate and citric acid; this combination is highly effective.
