What is Paroxetine hydrochloride - Meaning and definition

The hydrochloride salt form of paroxetine, a phenylpiperidine derivative and a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) with antidepressant and anxiolytic properties.
Paroxetine binds to the presynaptic serotonin transporter complex resulting in negative allosteric modulation of the complex thereby blocking reuptake of serotonin by the presynaptic transporter. Inhibition of serotonin recycling enhances serotonergic function through serotonin accumulation in the synaptic cleft, resulting in long-term desensitization and downregulation of 5HT1 (serotonin) receptors and leading to symptomatic relief of depressive illness.

Depression. Initial: 20 mg/day. May increase if needed. Max: 50 mg/day.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder. Initial: 20 mg/day. May increase if needed. Maintenance: 40-60 mg/day.
Panic disorder. Initial: 10 mg. May increase if needed. Maintenance: 40-60 mg/day.
Social anxiety disorder. Initial: 20 mg/day. May increase if needed. Max: 50-60 mg/day.
Anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder. Initial: 20 mg/day. May increase if needed. Max: 50 mg/day.

Adverse drug reactions: somnolence, insomnia, headache, dizziness, decreased libido, chest pain, palpitation, hypertension, anxiety , agitation, abnormal dreams, impaired concentration, depersonalisation, amnesia, emotional lability.
