Medical Assistance in Dying is a process whereby a doctor or nurse practitioner assists an individual, at their request, to intentionally end their life. MAiD is administered with drugs that can be taken orally or administered intravenously. Regardless of which option is chosen, a physician or nurse practitioner is always present during the process.
In Canada, patients can request and receive MAiD if they:
• are 18 or older.
• provide informed consent.
• are eligible for services by Canada's public health system.
• have a "grievous and irremediable medical condition" that produces unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be reversed or relieved "under conditions that you consider acceptable."
• are informed of ways to relieve the suffering, including palliative care.
Due to changes to the legislation, patients are no longer required to have a fatal or terminal condition to be eligible for MAiD in Canada.
