What is Clotrimazole - Meaning and definition

A synthetic, imidazole derivative with broad-spectrum, antifungal activity.
Clotrimazole inhibits biosynthesis of sterols, particularly ergosterol, an essential component of the fungal cell membrane, thereby damaging and affecting the permeability of the cell membrane. This results in leakage and loss of essential intracellular compounds, and eventually causes cell lysis.

Adult
PO - Oropharyngeal candidiasis: per loz contains clotrimazole 10 mg: suck 1 loz 5 times/day for 14 days.
Vaginal - Vulvovaginal candidiasis - pessary: 100 mg/day for 6 days.
Otic - Fungal otitis externa - 1% soln: apply as directed.
Topical - Skin fungal infections - 1% cream/lotion/soln: apply 2-3 times/day for 2-4 wk.

Adverse drug reactions: Erythema, stinging, irritation; hypersensitivity reactions; contact dermatitis, GI disturbances, dysuria, mental depression, elevated liver enzymes.
