Autonomy is a term used in medical ethics.
It is the duty to respect and promote an individual´s choices for themselves in achieving what they believe to be in their best interests. It may be literally described as self-rule — probably better as deliberate self-rule.
It becomes limited if it infringes on the interests of others.
It also includes respect for confidentiality and privacy — the latter relates to information and to freedom from unnecessary or unwanted interference by others (medical procedures, touching, etc.).
Respect for autonomy also underlies both informed consent and the use of advanced directives.
