Average lenght of care
-
The average length of care episode that patients spent with the service, from the date of first face to face contact with the patient to the date of death or discharge. This figure is not affected by the number of times the patient has been seen, but measures the whole length of the episode of care from first face to face contact to death or discharge.
Example (assuming 30 day months for illustration purposes)
Patient 1 First contact 1 June, died 30 June = 30 days
Patient 2 First contact 20 March, discharged 20 May = 60 days
Patient 3 First contact 10 January, died 10 November = 300 days
Patient 4 First contact 1 June last contact August 20 = 80 days
Average length of care of these 4 patients = (30+60+300+80)/4 = 470/4 = 117.5 daysReference: http://www.ncpc.org.uk/download/mds2009/3_Guide_to_Section_3.pdf
