A synthetic antiviral agent.
Indinavir selectively binds to the active site of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) protease and inhibits its activity, preventing the protease-mediated cleavage of gag-pol viral polyproteins. As a result, immature, noninfectious virions are produced.
